What you should know about mental health

It’s widely known that mental health is as important to a person as physical health and of course, neither of them is unlinked. You need to feel good with yourself to maintain health, as physical health issues almost always affect mental ones and vice versa.

Definition

The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state in which an individual has the ability to realize what abilities he has, possesses the power to deal with every day stress and has the potential to work productively and be an active member of his community. Back in the days it was said that there aren’t any official definitions of the term mental illness as it was not defined by any child neurologist in Dubai or psychologist.

Apart from that, there is another word that needs to be defined. This word is stress. What do we mean with this so widely used word? Stress is basically the way in which a body reacts to certain changes in which a response or adjustment is required on a mental or physical basis. It can get triggered by many different thoughts and situations. In the long run, it has the potential to leave you feeling frustrated, angry, nervous, or anxious and is caused by an existing stress-causing factor or, as it is usually called, “stressor”. Dealing with a serious illness or caring for someone who is sick or hurt can cause a great deal of stress. Everybody knows the way that stress can affect our psychology and that it can cause or be involved in many illnesses.

Mental disorders

If truth be told, there are countless categorizations of mental disorders. Apart from that, there are countless aspects of an individual’s personality and behavior that can experience disorders. Sometimes anxiety and fear are classified as an anxiety disorder, but the most common mental disorders include specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic, social anxiety disorder, etc.

Mood disorders are also common and listed in those documents. They usually include intense and sustained sadness, melancholia or despair and are commonly called major depression, which is also known as clinical depression on unipolar depression. It is possible for milder yet constant depression to be diagnosed as a condition known as dysthymia.

Personality—A number of different personality disorders exist these days, including those that are at times classified as being rather eccentric. These are typically inclusive of paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal personality disorders. Then there are types of mental disorders that are considered as being rather emotional or dramatic. These include antisocial, borderline, histrionic or narcissistic personality disorders. Certain types of disorders are considered as being fear-related too and include obsessive compulsive disorder etc. Speaking in general, personality disorders tend to get triggered in childhood, or by late adolescence.
